research on romantic relationship development has historically assumed there is a linear progression from short-term, shallow relationships to a single, committed relationship in early adulthood. However, that progression may have been profoundly altered by recent sociohistorical shifts. As seen in the present study of a sample of young adults coming of age in the 21st century, there is great diversity in romantic relationship experiences in emerging adulthood, with the roots of this diversity traceable to family and peer relationships earlier in life.
