A, definately! When I was pregnant w/ my first I believe I consumed folic acid pills (a  B vitamin), to prevent spina bifida.

Confirmed, A.  Spina bifida is the very worst thing that can happen, and there are various milder problems that can occur which are all known as 'neural tube defects'.  (Even the milder ones are pretty bad.)
