Simple diffusion doesn't require a protein. Its the movement of particles from high to low concentration. Facilitated means that the particle is being "helped" by a protein to move across the membrane Wink Face

Simple diffusion is movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration without an input of energy because these molecules are able to freely pass through the membrane. Facilitated diffusion follows the same rules as regular diffusion (higher to lower concentration and no energy input), but uses membrane protein carrier to transport substances that would otherwise be unable to pass through the membrane.  Slight Smile Hope it helps!!!!

Simple diffusion is achieved by small non-polar molecules that can cross the membrane.  Facilitated diffusion is for larger charged or polar molecules that are hydrophilic and require a transport protein to cross the membrane.
