they have receptors on the outside that extend into the intracellular matrix. they recognize chemical messengers, bind with them, and transmit the messages to the inside of the cell and eventually to the nucleus

Cell membranes contain a variety of protein receptors (i.e. G-protein coupled receptor, protein kinase) which contain binding sites for certain ligands. When the ligand is binded, a signal transduction pathway occurs through various secondary messengers (i.e. Ca2+, IP3) which can further amplify signals and start a phosphorylation cascade that ultimately leads to a cellular response such as protein synthesis.
