Hydrolysis is the decomposition of a chemical bond by the addition of water. When hydrolysis occurs with food, the food is broken up into smaller components, making it easier to digest (more surface area for enzymes to act on).

Hydrolysis is the chemical reaction that uses water to split the bonds of all digestible foods. It produces single molecules small enough to be absorbed by the intestines.
