A unique characteristic of mammals is that they have hair. No other clade possesses this characteristic, making it a shared derived characteristic. But, mammals are also vertebrates, in that they all have backbones. But they aren't the only clade in the subphylum Vertebrata, making a backbone a shared ancestral characteristic.
