Sickle-cell disease is caused by a mutation that changes a single codon of the b-globin gene from 5’-GAG (encoding glutamic acid) to 5’-GTG (encoding valine).  Heterozygotes have a distinct phenotype involving malaria resistance.  Which of the following terms apply to this mutation?
Select all that applies
A) synonymous (or silent) mutation
B) missense mutation
C) nonsense mutation
D) frameshift mutation
E) null (or loss-of-function) mutation
F) transversion
G) indel mutation
H) neomorphic (or gain-of-function) mutation
I) transition

In genetics, a missense mutation (a type of nonsynonymous substitution) is a point mutation in which a single nucleotide change results in a codon that codes for a different amino acid.

So, B

E) null (or loss-of-function) mutation
