Shawn Daken Data Communications Professor Snyder 9/10/18 Chapter 1 Short-Answer What are open standards, and what, if any, are the advantages of such standards? An open standard is a standard that is publicly available for all to use. It can also be defined as a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose. Open standards are nonproprietary. It has various rights to use associated with it and may also have various properties of how it was designed. The huge advantage of open standards is that everyone has access to them because they are public. This makes its much easier for people to collaborate on a standard, making sure it is error-free and up to par. What is a protocol and why would one be used? Provide an example of a technological protocol or a society-based protocol. Protocols are the rules that establish how the communications occur. They can also be defined as rules that determine how something is performed or accomplished. This includes stating how the data is formatted, how the format is to be interpreted, if a connection can be established between two devices, and at what rate at which the data can be transmitted. An example of a social-based protocol would be language, every country has a set language that they use to communicate with each other. How do formal standards differ from de facto standards? Formal standards differ from de facto standards. Most of the time de facto standards are derived from open standards, usually by its existence and use. Basically, it has achieved a dominate position by public acceptance or marketing. From this point, a de facto standard will occasionally evolve into a formal standard. For a standard to be formalized, it must be reviewed by a standard-setting body, which are managed by professional organizations, not formal government agencies. What are the five phrases associated with the evolution of data communication networks? Five phrases associated with the evolution of data communication networks would be: 1)Digitization - 1960’s 2)Expansion - 1970’s 3)Deregulation – 1980’s 4)Internet as a Common Tool – 1990’s 5)Persuasive Computing – 2010’s With what scale of network is the IEEE associated? The IEEE, or the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is associated with establishing new wireless communication standards. The IEEE also states that they are “the world’s largest technical professional society – promoting the development and application of electrotechnology and allied sciences….”. What organization is the principal standards-setting body in the United States? The American National Standards Institute, or ANSI for short, is the principal standards-setting body in the United States. What is an encoding scheme? An encoding scheme is a means of translating one type of data or information into another. For example, translating English to another language would require an encoding scheme that follows a formatting protocol for that specific language. What is telemetry? Telemetry is the wireless transmission and reception of data for the purpose of remotely monitoring environmental conditions or equipment parameters. It is used within mobile robots, satellites, space probs, and so much more. Book Citation: Dooley, Allen. Digital Business Networks. , 2014.
