1. Term Project #1 Applied Science Current Events Folder 10% Each week, each student will choose one current event article related to Applied Science Instructions Once they have chosen the article, the student will: Provide a copy of the article (scanned or cut and pasted into a word document, attached as a pdf, jpeg, etc.) To eliminate the possible exposure to computer viruses, URL and/or internet addresses are not accepted. write a short summary of the article including the field(s) of applied science the article is relevant to (chemistry, biology, physics, food science, microbiology, etc.) reference the article using MLA format (include MLA guide resource on course website) submit a copy of the article and assignment to their student folder in the course web page (D2L) Students will keep a folder (electronic) of current topics related to Applied Science for the first eleven weeks of the semester. The document will be submitted through the course website on Desire 2 Learn. Comments It is important that the submitted document is time stamped each week to ensure that students are submitting a current event each week instead of submitting all 11 documents from the week the assignment is due. (Time management skills) The articles can be from newspapers, journals, magazines, websites, etc. The article must be in the form of a Word Document when submitted to the folder The summary should not be more than ½ page Term Project #2 Glossary 10% At the end of week 13, each student will submit a course glossary of important scientific words or terms introduced throughout the course. The source of the words or terms could be PowerPoint slides, lecture notes, current events articles (possibly ones used in Term project 1), guest speakers, etc. The instructions for the project should include but is not limited to the following: The minimum number of words or terms set by the instructor While the student is encouraged to choose words or terms on their own, the instructor should provide a number of words/terms that are to be included in every student’s glossary. Some suggested examples are biotechnology, stoichiometry, eukaryotic, processing, DNA, orbitals, CFIA, etc. A short definition of the word/term is included with each word used A list of references in MLA format used for the project should be included. Assignments Suggestions Assignment #1 In class assignment summarizing the discussion by the guest speaker. 5% Format could be short answer/ multiple choice/ true or false Scantron Assignment #2 Applied Science Websites 5% List 10 websites from reliable applied science sources Ask students how they determined that the websites they chose are reliable sources (students should use the information gained from lectures to determine if websites are reliable) Some reliable sources include: Discover Health Canada Time Magazine Popular Science National Geographic Microbiology Bytes American Association for the Advancement of Science Smithsonian – Science and Technology Royal Society of Chemistry
