Margherita DiGiacomo Comparison paper Have you ever had someone in your life that is related to you and has similar aspects but, yet you differ in so many other ways? In that case, I have, and it is my younger sister. We are similar in what we want in live but differ in how we want those things to look in life. For example, we both want to move out of our parent’s house and get a place on our own to become independent and not have to depend on our parents as much anymore. But, here is the twist, I prefer a place to live in a rather nice neighborhood even if it will cost me a good amount of money for multiple reasons. She on the other hand would not pass up buying a house/apartment that is decent looking, cheap, and nonetheless in a bad city or neighborhood. The few characteristics that make us different is our preferences. I opt for living in a medium-class neighborhood and in an urban area mainly for the reason of me being a mother. I would rather pay cash out to live in an area with a low crime rates and high mortgage rates then to live in a lower-class area that is cheap and has multiple crimes involved in a day-to-day lifestyle and chance it is costing me my families life or even my own. It is well known that kids growing up in a neighborhood with high poverty and unemployment rates have a lower chance of graduating high school. This is all due to the disadvantage of money, adults with not enough education, single parent households, and mainly supported living. To back that fact up, kids growing up in a lower poverty and medium to high employment neighborhoods tend to be more successful due to that fact that they are looking up to their parent/guardians for guidance. My sister has a preference on living in a low mortgage area, in the middle of the city. She does not seem to mind the everyday crimes that happen within a mile’s radius of where she is living. She likes the idea of living off welfare checks and using EBT to make it by everyday for food. My sister is one who will not further her education, so she can take bigger steps to having a steady, well-paying job. Instead, she collects unemployment, then will get a job working at a fast food franchise just to be fired or even quit. Living in the areas that she chooses she says is easier for her to maintain, but she clearly does not realize that she has what it takes to turn her life around. As we grew older we started to become more different and less similar. Me and my sister are similar in ways that we want to live on our own. We both wanted to move out at a young age, so we were not always depending on our parents to support us. We wanted to learn to become independent early in life, so we would be ready at what life would throw at us in the future. Becoming independent sets, you up for a better future along the road, because you learn to get a job at a young age and work your way up the line and if you are succeeding in that job you are more than likely to keep getting promoted and that always looks good when you are ready to move on to the job that you want for your career. Not only does it teach you work ethic, but it also teaches you how to save money, and pay bills and being a responsible person overall. Overall, she may be my sister, but we have more differences than similarities. I could be living in the same boat as she is right now, but I like to thank my daughter for making me a better person and wanting such a bright future for her, so I have to strive to give her the best. I know this is just a phase for my sister and want to believe that after she gets out of this phase she will start becoming more like me. Also, due to the fact that she is younger than me, she always has me to look up so she makes better decisions.
