Background
Phyllosphere: total above ground portion of plants as the habitat for microorganisms
“the leaf surface” (Bacterial Diversity in Tree Canopies of the Atlantic Forest)
Phyllospheres vary between
species
Our Research
Cercis canadensis
Variables
Independent:
Area that we extracted bacteria
Nutrient/Levine EMB A/Mannitol salt
Dependent: amount of bacteria/type of bacteria
Techniques
Bacteria Extraction
Avoid contact
Immediately in sterile tube

Hypothesis
We predicted we would find different epiphytes in differing phyloshperes
Our research supported our hypothesis, as we found that epiphytes differed in different locations
Concepts and results
All phylospheres are not the same
Many factors influence the make up of a phylosphere – location, climate etc.
Some swabbing issues, not a huge sample was collected – inconsistencies
Future, more in depth study could be performed to pinpoint the phylospheres of exact locations on the tree
