Unemployment Based on the article title “U.S. Lost 33,000 Jobs in September; Unemployment Rate Dips to 4.2%” (Cohen,2017). Publishes on the Economy section in The New York Times on October 6, 2017 by Patricia Cohen. How the impact of the hurricanes affects Unemployment rate. Patricia Cohen graduates from Princeton and Cornell Universities and begins writing for The New York Times in 1997. She also worked for others newspapers such as Idea Editor, New York Newsday, Washington Post, and Rolling Stone magazine. She is also the author of the book “In our Prime”. This article has as the objective to informed the amount of jobs that were lost in September 2017, due to the weather inclemency, according to the article 1.5 million of people were unemployed because off the weather conditions as the Bureau of the Labor Statistics report. We all know the sad situation our country faced during that season, there where disasters in Florida and Texas, which affected a lot of business forcing them to close for long period of time. The author made a really god investigation and collection of data visiting places to directly know the amount of people affected, one the places that were visited by the author was a home-care franchise in Palm Beach Florida and had an interview with Mr. Gropper the owner of this company which told him that his hiring on hold and more than 75 employees were on waiting to the recover to continue with their jobs. The city of Texas was in a similar situation. A large amount of fabrics, factories, manufacturing plants and small business were close. The author provided statistics that support his article, but even though he claims that US economy remains strong based in the reports of Sullivan the United States Chief of economist don’t show signs of weakness, In fact taking out Florida and Texas there were not increment in jobless claims in a period of two month until that date. So, we can conclude that even been affected those two states in the country the general employment situation was in good condition at that time. Companies such as Amazon hired 27000 new employees to work in 25 location all around the country. Which was a 35% more than they did in 2016. This article was really interesting to read because sometimes we relate unemployment to many different factors but weather is one unexpected factor that is almost impossible to advance because we never know with exactitude how much we are going to be affected or for how long. I really enjoy the fact that the author was directly to the locations and made an investigation to know the real numbers of people that were affected.
