Dylan Bryant 3/22/15 Eng 111 M07B Could Aliens Exist? Throughout history, people around the world have reported strange events, ranging from UFO sightings to actual abductions. Could Aliens really be out there, or are these just series of hoaxes and optical illusions? Whatever the cause, its led hundreds of thousands of people to the belief that another intelligent life form is out there. Archeologists have discovered art, depicting what looks like aliens that dates back to times throughout history. One cave painting found in Italy, dating back to around 10,000 B.C appears to show to figures wearing strange suits and are surrounded by stars and depictions of the moon. Could the stars and moon have a deeper meaning? Maybe they were trying to tell where these strange beings came from or maybe its just another elaborate piece of art. One piece of art found in Kiev shows a short figure with a tall oval shaped head and oval eyes. It looks almost identical to the little grey aliens seen in modern movies. The ceramic plate also has lines drawn out in a spiral formation so it looks like its spinning as would a UFO. Around the spirals, there are different forms of reptiles, which some believe Aliens are closely related to. Petroglyphs found in southwest North America show two flat objects with large domes on the top. Indian folklore tells a story of two objects colliding in the sky and one crash landing in the region of Death Valley. They say another ship then came down and men got out. They proceeded to assist the downed object. The painting of the two objects shows one circular object in perfect condition while the one on the right has crooked lines and what appear to be dents. All around the world, our ancient ancestors built objects that still to this day would be near impossible. How did they accomplish such feats with only the use copper tools? The Egyptians for example built the pyramids of Giza. They allegedly carved each 2.3-ton block with copper hammers and chisels and then pulled them up the 481-foot structure using rope and log rollers. The heaviest stones weighing from twenty-five to eighty tons are found in the king’s chamber. These massive blocks were cut in Aswan nearly five hundred miles away from their final resting place. How did these early men carve and transport an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks. Could they have had other worldly technologies? The Aztecs also built large pyramids. How is it that different groups of people all around the world are building almost identical structures without being able to communicate with one another? The pattern in which these structures were built raises questions as well. Both the pyramids of Giza and the city of Tenochtitlan have pyramids laid out in the same pattern as the stars in Orion’s belt. Maybe this is where the so-called aliens came from or maybe ancient man believed this is where we came from. Although it is unknown, there is some reason this pattern was so commonly followed. Another baffling sight is the Nazca lines in the Peruvian desert. Across this vast desert lies a 37 mile long and one-mile wide array of perfectly straight lines. Some are parallel and some intersect to form and intricate geometrical shape including perfect right triangles. There are also large Animals carved into the ground. One of the animals, a monkey, is roughly 890 feet long. One of the strangest depictions is of a little bipedal figure that has wide eyes and appears to have a mask on with a hose running from the mouth. Many of the figures are almost flawless. You have to ask, how in the world did they draw flawless pictures so large you can’t even see them from the ground? To actually see the entire thing you have to be in an aircraft so whom were they making these for if they couldn’t see them themselves? Some people think the lines and depictions could have something to do with either magnetic fields or water. Maybe these petroglyphs were made to honor the gods or maybe they weren’t even made by humans but one thing we do know is that they’re breath taking. They were made between 200 B.C and 600 B.C and have lasted over 1,500 years. Sumerian myths speak of a people called the Annunaki who supposedly descended from the sky. The name Annunaki means ‘Princely Offspring.” Their god was Anu so they believed these people were the offspring of god. Whether these were aliens or people how did they descend from the sky and where from? Many unanswerable questions are raised by this myth and the art behind it. We will never know the truth behind them but it does make your imagination take over. Archeologists discovered hundreds of golden figures ranging from 2-3 inches. While many represent birds, fish and frogs, about ten of them look almost identical to modern day fighter jets. These Incan figurines are dated between 500 and 800 B.C.E. In 1997 scientists built large-scale modules of the figures and tested their aerodynamics. When tested the models flew perfectly. Though it is far fetched that these could be jets, it is interesting that they by some coincidence made aerodynamic figures. The only information we get from ancient art is opinion. We will never have proof because there is little written information of other life forms and no eyewitnesses. We do have documentation and eyewitnesses of later sightings though. The first documented UFO sighting in America was in 1639 over the Charles River in Boston, MA. Governor John Winthrop recorded it in a journal. Although he himself did not see it, he described the witness as a sober, discreet man and says he saw a great light in the sky that flamed up when it stood still. In 1904, three crewmembers of the USS Supply sighted three objects, which appeared below the horizon. The object in front was said to be egg shaped and the two behind were circular. While UFO does mean unidentified flying object, the wright brothers had invented the airplane only one year earlier so they were not yet mass-produced. What could theses three men have seen if it wasn’t airplanes? In 1909 strange moving lights and solid bodies were seen hovering over New Zealand. In 1917 thousands of people observed a very bright object gyrate and descend in Portugal. In 1941 in the United states a Baptist minister observed a crash with what looked like alien bodies. The military quickly arrived and shutdown the seen. Some say the witnesses were sworn to silence. Could the government be trying to cover something up? One of the most famous sightings was one in Los Angeles, California in 1942. They call it the Battle of Los Angeles. Sightings of unidentified flying objects trigger thousands of marines to begin firing anti aircraft rounds into the air. The wartime sirens were initiated and the city went into chaos. Although the military say there were objects in the air, few saw them and no information was released stating what it really was. Thousands of people report seeing UFO’s every year. Are we really alone or is there another intelligent life form out there? With millions of galaxies in the universe, its hard to say its impossible that there could be aliens out there but for now all we can do is wait for the proof that they either exist or don’t.
