TO: Jane_Doe@coloradotech.edu CC: JKares@coloradotech.edu SUBJECT: Effective Writing and Research Skills Hello Jane, To excel in your Criminal Justice career, ENGL105 is one of the many courses you’ll take. The importance of effective writing skills and research skills should be pretty obvious. Unfortunately, these skills are often looked over. Writing effectively will help you convey messages much easier. With proper research skills being the foundation that your argument is built on, you will be able to take a problem, thoroughly research it, and develop your own thoughts about the subject or material. Thoroughly investigating a subject is not just collecting direct quotes from articles and books, then trying to piece them together to make the message understandable. It’s just as important to use credible sources to validate your argument as well. Once you have laid your foundation with proper research, you must then rely on your writing skills to reach out to your intended or targeted audience. In college, your targeted audience is your fellow classmates and professors. You will display your writing skills through individual projects or discussion boards. In a professional setting, your targeted audience will be your co-workers, supervisors, or managers. You will be displaying your writing and researching skills through team/board meetings and training classes. Through these many sources, you will be able to demonstrate how your created an effective game plan, collected valuable information from reliable sources, and created a course of action. Writing and research skills aren’t just for academic or professional settings, we also use those skills for personal use. On one of our discussion boards, we talked about how we use these skills on a daily basis. I’m sure you use your writing and research skills more than you know. They always come in handy when sending emails, jotting down some information, or even researching products. Lastly, as a Criminal Justice major, it is very important that you take this class seriously! While writing skills play an essential role in being successful within this line of work, they also help to make certain that you can tolerate the responsibilities that may come up against you for the duration of your career. I trust that this information has given you a better perception of your upcoming class. I learned a lot of new things with the help of Dr. Kares, and I know that you will too! Best wishes in your future endeavors, Charity Brunston
