Ethics Kasandra Kurzinski Walden University July 13, 2019 Ethics In this assignment I will be selecting one ethical scenario. The scenario I chose was the one about videotaping participants, which was scenario number 1. I will first explain the ethical issues and how the study may violate principles of ethical behavior. I will then propose an alternative research design from the assigned Learning Resources that could possibly remedy the identified issues. I will then explain in detail how the new design would be set up and carried out. Ethical Issues I think the ethical issues here are pretty clear. The researcher is secretly video recording two students. In part, this is deception and in section 8.07 the American Psychological Association (2010) clearly states that deception should only be used when no other non-deceptive means are available, and the data collected would be of significant value. I do not believe this scenario meets this threshold. Another ethical issue is that according to the APA (2010) in section 8.03 a researcher must get informed consent from a participant before recording their voices and images. There are some exceptions such as recording in a public place, but this scenario doesn’t appear to meet that criteria. Based on this section the research is acting unethically by recording these participants without their informed consent. This is still true even though they were told about the recording afterwards Alternative Research Design The alternative research design I would suggest using that could possibly remedy the identified issues would be the Naturalistic Research Design. I think this design is the best fit because it is designed to “describe and measure the behavior of people or animals as it occurs in their everyday lives” (Stangor, 2015, p. 128). Setting up a naturalistic research design study should be straight forward in how it is set up and carried out. The design would be set up by first recruiting willing participants since the researcher appears to be recruiting from a school. The participants would be recruited and screened individually away from one another since the goal is to study initial interactions between people. I would conceal the purpose of the study because this may change how the people interact with one another. However, I would describe as much of the study as possible without giving away the intent of the study. I would then go through an informed consent and let each participant know they will be both audio and video recorded and get their consent to do this. I would not tell them when the recording would take place so as to preserve the integrity of the study. After that I would then schedule a time for the participants to come in and interact with one another. I would record my observations live while they are happening and then later via the recording to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Conclusion In this assignment I selected one ethical scenario. The scenario I had chosen was the one about videotaping participants, which was scenario number 1. I first explained the ethical issues and how the study may have violated principles of ethical behavior. I then explained in detail how the new design would be set up and carried References American Psychological Association. (2010). Introduction and applicability.
