Math
Review all math (i.e. oral, SQ, IV calculation, etc.)
mcg mg g kg >/1000 mcg mg g kg /1000 mcl ml l ml /2.2 lb. kg > HX:VD >> HX/H:VD/H >> X=VD/H
IV Flow Rate (1 step method): (amount of fluid x gtt/mL)
(hrs to admin x min/hr (60)) = gtt/min
Ie…500 ml is to infuse over 5 hours; drop factor is 10 ml. How many drops per minute will this IV run?
Example: 500 ml x 10 ml 5000
5 hrs x 60 mins = 300 = 16.666 = 17 gtt/min
“Set the pump/Set the controller (ml/hr)/IV Flow Rate”:
(total volume/total time) “standard time is 100 ml/1 hr”
Ie…50 mL is to infuse over 30 mins using an IV pump. Set the pump?
Because this is 30 mins (½ hour), you must convert time.
50 ml / 30 mins = 50 / (30/60) = 50 / 0.5 = 100 ml/hr
Ie…75 mL IV med to run over 45 mins using an IV pump. Set the controller?
Because the is 45 mins (3/4 hr), you must convert time.
75 ml / 45 mins = 75 / (45/60) = 75 / 0.75 = 100 ml/hr
Total hours to run: total mL (volume)/(mL/hr)
ie…500 mL @ 50 mL/hr. How many hours will this IV run?
500 mL/50 mL/hr = 10 hours.
Total mL/hr: total volume/total hours
ie…. 500 mL to run over 10 hours. How many mL/hr?
500 mL/10 hrs = 50 mL/hr
IV problems that have time answers:
If you come up with 7.14 hours. You need to convert the .14 hours to mins. so,…..
.14 x 60 (mins) = 8.4 mins.
So the infusion would run 7 hours and 8 mins.
Advanced IV calc: To figure mg, mcg, or units/hr
Total volume = ordered set
Total med X mg, mcg, units/hr
Ie…Pharmacy adds 500 mg med to 1000 mL of IV solution. IV set @ 50 mL/hr. How many mg/hr will this IV infuse?
1000 mL = 50 mL/hr = 25,000 = 25 mg/hr
500 mg X mg/hr 1000x
Advanced IV calc: To figure mg/hr >>> mL/hr
Total med = ordered (med)/hr
Total volume X mL/hr
Ie…500 mg in 500 mL. Ordered 120 mg/hr. How many mL/hr will this IV run?
500 mg = 120 mg/hr = 60,000 = 120 mL/hr
500 mL X mL/hr 500x
