Examples: distractors… Further education Further teaching Further instructions Additional instructions Further instructions Drugs: Beta blocker - -lol, regulate or make HR low Ace inhibitor - -pril, side effect coughing Plavix – anticoagulant, clotting, platelets, dissolve clots Prednisone – steroid, used after eye sx to reduce swelling, anti-inflammatory, to keep airway open during a laryngostomy Risk factors of surgery: Bleeding, clots, infection, Get off blood thinners days prior to sx. Give antibiotics before, during and after surgery to help ward off infection. Albuterol – bronchodilator, HR up, Glucophage (metformin) – insulin, they have to be off before surgery, hepatic (liver) toxicity, Liver fxn tests (ALT, AST) Long term steroid use they are prone to getting DM Glaucoma – Atrovent and Xalantan, be sure measure the IOP Narcan – drug reversal, Phenergan – antiemetic Zocor (Simvastatin) – monitor liver enzymes, hepatic (liver) toxicity, How eye drops are administered, when giving eye drops label right and left, and only give to infected eye. Time frame ranges from 5-10 minutes for 2 different medications for same eye. Admin drops before ointment Primary, 2ndary, Tertiary Prevention Corneal ulcers – patient teaching, is there anything involving Corneal staining – looks for FB Macular Degeneration – Cataract surgery – takes out cornea and IMPROVES vision Sensory Perception after eye surgery, clear path and make sure nothing will trip the patient up. Independence is a MUST for elderly patients, involve them in the care. Help me HELP YOU! Visual acuity – 20/100, the person can see only 20 ft., what others can see at 100. ASA – blood thinner, stop before surgery Conjunctivitis – Pink eye, infection, inflammation, abx for at least 72 hrs, contagious for 24 hrs.
