My artwork this year was a made to portray many mixed emotions. Where mercy is a natural reflexive “habit” of a human, sometimes, we block it up and don’t allow any to escape. The incorporated shield and sword brings in a little bit of aura from the battle field, where all mercy seems to lie always in the captor’s hand. Just in the seemingly last moments, where the sword the raised upon the victim and his shield is lost from his arm, is when we when we pour our hearts out…but whom is different matter. Begging the oppressor will do nothing. It will do nothing if something else is added to this equation: Allah. He is the one who will make the mercy to penetrate through the oppressor’s wall that he has built up. He is the one who will allow the oppressor to rethink the decision. He is the one who will allow the oppressor to lower his arm. He is the one who is the mercy. Allah (swt) is the one we should turn to— in desperate times and good. He is the one who controls everything and to summon strength for compassion from other and yourself, it is to Allah (swt) we should turn to. That is why I wrote the ayah from Surah Mulk on the shield. The shield is there as a symbol of safety, but the only safety and help that will ever be given will be from Allah (swt), the most-merciful. Maqsood Rana was one of the most inspiring artist when I was creating this piece. His pieced of calligraphy portray more than the meaning of the ayah itself, but he paints his work to depict the ayahs in different wispy, floral patterns, or even a crowded battle field too. In my work, I first used geometric patterns to bring in a more modern look, but then the calligraphy itself was more filled with arabesque floral art. The floral additions throughout the piece was used to convey a peaceful atmosphere, kind of “dripping with its ooze” in someplace. I centered the word Rahman itself to try to convey the strength of him and his influence upon up. The ayah wrapped around in the shield which connected in with “Ar-Rahman” is more for the to show the association between the worldly, weak mercy given off of the shield and the strength of the Allah, the Most-Merciful.
