Question 1

Given that the pirate ship runs on carbonate ions, and with the limited chemicals available on Mars, she has begun to investigate possible reactions.

The sodium chloride can react with the calcium carbonate.

1)  why would she want to use the carbonate product of this reaction, rather than the reactant?

2) If she uses 150mL of a 1.12 mol/L NaCI solution with 100mL of a 1.17 mol/L CaCO, solution, what concentration of carbonate ions can she make? (note: limiting reagent question) AND The actual yield of carbonate ions was slightly lower than expected. Theorize as to why this may have been.

3) she has been busy and has also developed a new solvent in which Fe(CO,), is highly soluble. If she mixes 17.2g of iron (LI) carbonate in enough of this solvent to create 500mL, of solution, what is the concentration of carbonate ions?

Question 4

#11.Mid-Digital Hair and Freckles
Finger mid-digital hair (M) is dominant over the recessive trait of no mid-digital hair (m). Freckles (F) is dominant over the recessive trait of no freckles (f). (It is important to note that this example of mid-digital hair and freckles cannot be explained with simple genetics, but for the purpose of this question, assume that it can.)

A woman that is heterozygous for freckles and has no mid-digital hair is married to a man with no freckles that is heterozygous for mid-digital hair. The couple is expecting a child.

Draw a Punnett square of this cross.

I did my punnett square but i have no idea if it is right and i don't know how to show it to you.

#12. use the information from 11 to answer this. a.What is the probability that their offspring will have mid-digital hair? b).What is the probability that two offspring in a row will have no freckles? c). What is the probability of two offspring in a row having mid-digital hair and freckles?

Question 5

#15.Once an abundant species in Alberta, the caribou population is currently staggering at approximately 6,700 individuals.
Little Smoky caribou herd is located in Northern Alberta, and its population is a risk of extirpation. In 1970, there were only 105 caribous in the Little Smoky area with a per capita growth rate of –0.301 between 1970 and 2012.
What was the population of Little Smoky caribou herd in 2012?
Express your answer rounded to the nearest whole number.

#16.Pronghorns look very similar to antelopes and are considered the fastest mammal in North America. They can be found in the Southeastern parts of Alberta.
In the 1800s, it is thought that the population of pronghorns reach 35 million in the Prairies. By 1924, only 16,794 pronghorns could be found in Alberta. In 1996, only 8500 remained.
What is the per capita growth rate of pronghorns in Alberta between 1924 and 1996?
Express your answer as a value between 0 and 1 rounded to two decimal places. If the population is decreasing indicate this with a negative sign.

#36.The moose population in Northern Alberta is estimated to be around 11, 800. During the year, there were 5054 births, 4567 deaths, 25 immigrations and 52 emigrations.
Calculate the per capita growth rate. Express your answer as a value between 0 and 1 rounded to two decimal places.  If the population is decreasing indicate this with a negative sign.
given: Ni=11800- intial population
birth=5054
immigrations =25
death=4567
emigrations=52
cgr= ∆N/Ni.
cgr=(b+i)-(d+e)
cgr=(5054+25)-(4567+52)
cgr=4060/11800
cgr=0.0389 or 0.04?

#38.In a particular population of Paramecium species, 30 Paramecia were found in 4 mL of sample pond water. At another location, 85 Paramecia were found in 40 mL of sample pond water.
What is the change in density of the Paramecium species?
Express your answer rounded to two decimal places.
 Paramecia/mL

given: V=4mL, 40mL
Ni=30
Nf=85
find dp=?
Dp=N/V
85-30/40-4

Dp=55/36
Dp=1.527777778 or 1.53?

i have no idea if this is right or not. Have given the formulas's i used but if i used the wrong formula here is the biology 30 data booklet first page has all of the formulas needed for these questions:
https://education.alberta.ca/media/160189/b30_databooklet_ft_web.pdf

you can get back with me on this tomorrow sometime i won't hand this assignment in until i feel all of my answers are correct.

#34.Which of the following scenarios is an example of a density-dependent limiting factor?

Select one:
a. The population of sea turtles in the Caribbean decreases because of an increase in the number and intensity of hurricanes during the breeding season.
b. The spread of ticks among a moose population weakens the individual members, causing a decrease in the population density.
c. Warmer temperatures over several winters has resulted in an extensive pine beetle infestation of lodgepole pine trees across northern British Columbia and Alberta.
d. A forest fire destroys much of the habitat in the Boreal forest of Northern Alberta.
i think it is c?

Question 10

#6.Black-tailed prairie dogs used to be found in Alberta, but due to their destructive nature on farmland, the intensive efforts by ranchers and farmers to eradicate these animals has reduced the species to being found only in Saskatchewan.
A farmer in Saskatchewan samples a population of black-tailed prairie dogs living in his field. Based on several samples, he finds an average of 9 prairie dogs living in an area of 7.0 m2.
If he knows that his field is 4,000 m2, what is the approximate size of the prairie dog population?
Select one:
a. 571 prairie dogs
b. 444 prairie dogs
c. 3 111 prairie dogs
d. 5 143 prairie dogs

#8.In 2011, the city of Calgary had 1,096,833 people living within the city limits. Since then, there have been 245,678 births and 189,753 deaths. A total of 159,753 people moved to Calgary from other cities or countries, while only 12,354 people moved away from Calgary.
How did the population of Calgary change since 2011?
Express your answer using scientific notation in the form of x.yz x 10d people.
x,y,z,d

#9.Eastern loggerhead shrike is a critically endangered species of bird in Canada. Its population has been declining since the 1960s, and it has been speculated that habitat loss, pesticide usage combined, and climate change have affected the shrike population size.
In 2004, there were approximately 70 loggerhead shrikes breeding in Canada. Over the next five years, 85 new shrikes were born, 40 died, and 10 left the area.
Calculate the change in the population of eastern loggerhead shrike between 2004 and 2009.
Express your answer rounded to the nearest whole number.

Please help me out with these 3 questions, as to i am very confused on how to even answer them i started this topic yesterday. Thank you and have a great evening Wink Face
