The 1976 Flash Flood in Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado

Description

(a) On July 31, 1976, a thunderstorm dropped torrential rains over the headwaters of the Big Thompson River. A wall of water up to 6 m (20 ft) high rushed down the canyon (b), destroying everything in its path (including parts of U.S. Highway 34) and killing 145 people.
