SlideshowReport

Three zones of root growth.

Description
A longitudinal view of a typical root reveals three major zones: (a) a root apical meristem where cell division occurs protected by a root cap, (b) a zone of elongation, and (c) a zone of maturation, characterized by epidermal root hairs and other specialized cells. Phloem matures sooner than xylem as a way of supplying the energy needs of the growing root tip with organic compounds from the shoot.
