Ion uptake at root hair membranes.

Description
When soil mineral ion concentrations are lower than those within cells, root hair plasma membranes take up nutrient ions by active transport. The H+-ATPase establishes an electrochemical gradient that drives the active uptake of solutes. The resulting increase in intracellular solute concentration also drives the osmotic diffusion of water into the cell.
