General Biology

Tags
Description
General biology is the science that studies living organisms. This can include people, plants and animals. Most college students will have to take at least one biology class before earning their undergraduate degree. When learning about biology, the different categories of it are grouped into separate branches, into the type of organism that is being studied.

• The specialized levels of biology are microbiology, botany, and zoology. However, these groups can be broken down into smaller general sections. Biochemistry, microbiology, cellular biology, physiology and ecology. From these groups, the branches of general biology is formed. Although there are many other various branches of general biology, these are the main ones.

• Biochemistry is the branch of biology that studies the chemical reactions that happen in order for life to exists, with a strong focus on studying actual cells. This type of biology is referred to as the fundamental chemistry of life.

• Molecular biology is the study of the systems of biological molecules and how they interact with one another. This branch of general biology studies all biological functions on the molecular level. The next branch on general biology studies the most important building block that creates all life: the cell. This type of biology is called cellular biology. Cellular biology studies the cell as a unit while examining the molecular and chemical actions that happen within it.

• Another branch of general biology is physiology. Physiology studies all the functions, both physically and chemically, of the tissues and organ systems that make up an organism. This branch of biology is a common one to use when studying anything in the medical field. Ecology studies how various plants and animals interact with their surrounding environment. This type of biology also studies the way these organisms react with non-living things in their environment.

• Within all the branches of biology, there are many that study interactions on an even more specialized path. For instance, mycology only studies fungi. Ethology is a branch of biology that concentrates only on the study of animal behavior. The branch of biology that is known as genetics examines the genes and heredity within a living organism. Mammaology is a branch of general biology that studies only mammals, with no smaller concentration.

Since general biology covers so many fields, the smaller specializations within it are broken down to specific levels. Within these levels are the basics for studying every type of living organism, from humans to algae.
