SlideshowReport

The sites of early embryonic development in mammals.

Description
After an ovulated secondary oocyte is fertilized, initial cleavage and development of the resulting zygote occur in the oviduct of the mother. The blastocyst hatches from the zona pellucida before implanting into the inner lining of the uterus. A blastocyst is composed of an outer epithelial layer called the trophectoderm, which gives rise to extra embryonic tissues, such as the placenta, and an inner cell mass, which develops into the embryo. This inner cell mass is where embryonic stem cells are found.
