For ice massage, ice is frozen in a cylindrical container or a paper cup (A). The top half of the cup is cut away so the ice will come in contact with the patient. The therapist holds the lower part of the cup while stroking the ice over the part to be treated. (B) The “lollipop” technique involves placing a sucker stick or tongue depressor in the center of the container before it is frozen. The ice is then removed from the container, and the therapist uses the stick as a handle.
