Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, killed more than 2,400 American sailors and soldiers and thrust the United States into World War II. In an address to Congress the next day, President Roosevelt asked for a declaration of war calling the attack “a date which will live in infamy.”
