- Procedures and Diagnostic Tests Related to the Urinary System Procedure/Test Description Blood Urea Nitrogen A blood test to determine the amount of urea that is excreted by the kidneys. Abnormal results indicate urinary tract disease. Catheterization The insertion of a sterile tube through the urethra and into the urinary bladder for the purpose of withdrawing urine This procedure is used to obtain a sterile urine specimen and also to relieve distension when the patient is unable to void on his or her own. Clean Catch Specimen (CC) To minimize contamination from the genitalia, urine sample is obtained after cleaning the urinary opening and catching or collecting a sample in midstream (halfway through the urination process). Creatinine A blood test to determine the amount of creatinine present. Abnormal results indicate kidney disease. Creatinine Clearance A urine test to determine the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Abnormal results indicate kidney disease. Culture, Urine A urine test to determine the presence of microorganisms. Abnormal results indicate urinary tract infection.
