One way to think about the different phases or stages of adulthood is in terms of the relative potency or importance of the biological and social clocks. Except for the issue of childbearing for women, the  biological clock is relatively unimportant until some time in midlife, after which it becomes increasingly important. The social clock follows an opposite pattern.
