Asphyxiation Hazard

Asphyxia is a condition where the body doesn’t get adequate oxygen supply or has excessive carbon dioxide to function properly which may result in coma or death. An example of asphyxia is choking. Nerve cells in the brain begin to die in about 2-4 minutes.
The hazard is mainly present in service rooms, laboratory or production Areas, warehouse and confined spaces. Causes of Asphyxiates:
1.   The airway is physically blocked or as a side effect of an injury or other medical condition
2.   Inhalation of toxic fumes which lead to gases that displace oxygen in the atmosphere e.g. nitrogen and/or carbon dioxide
3.   Chemical Asphyxiates that prevent oxygen uptake at a cellular level, e.g. carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide.  
4.   Diphtheria
5.   Whooping cough
