Semifluidity of the lipid bilayer.

Tags
Description
(a) Spontaneous movements in the bilayer. Lipids can rotate (i.e., move 360 degrees) and move laterally (left to right) in their leaflet. (b) Flip-flop (moving between leaflets) does not happen spontaneously because the polar head group would have to pass through the hydrophobic region of the bilayer. Instead, the enzyme flippase must use the energy stored in ATP to flip phospholipids from one leaflet to the other.
