Thyroid hormone production—Relationship between pituitary and thyroid glands. Thyroid hormone synthesis is primarily mediated by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is secreted by the pituitary in response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) by the hypothalamus. Thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) is released into the serum in free form or bound to thyroid-binding globulin (TBG). Free thyroxine (free T4) exerts negative feedback at both the level of the pituitary and hypothalamus to decrease TSH release.
