Model for the bending of cilia and flagella

Description

(a) Isolated microtubule doublets can “walk” past one another by making and breaking dynein arm contacts, if ATP is present.

(b) The back-and-forth bending of a cilium or flagellum is produced by synchronized short “walks” by microtubules on opposite sides of the appendage. Long walks are prevented by the cross-connections between microtubules.
