At C:PL mode ratios at or below 0.8:1, bilayer width increases with increasing C:PL.
AtC:PL mole ratios above 0.9:1, two separate lamellar phases form, one representing a liquid crystalline lipid bilayer and another representing an immiscible cholesterol phase.
The immiscible cholesterol phase forms by phase separation as the membrane “saturates” with cholesterol.
