Transport Across Membranes

Description
Bulk transport across membranes involves
the formation of clathrin-coated vesicles
and/or caveolae.

a. Formation of a clathrin-coated vesicle initiates with formation of a coated pit (top two panels), which then buds (third panel from top) forming a free coated vesicle (bottom panel).

b. Caveola formation occurs at sites rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids due to insertion of caveolin into one leaflet of the membrane. Budding of the caveola yields a free vesicle.
