1. The outer segment is a stack of membranous disks, which contain the photoreceptive pigments.

2. This segment is connected by a thin cilium to the inner segment, which contains the cell nucleus, cytosol, and synaptic body.

3. The potential change produced in the outer segment travels to the synaptic body and is transmitted to one or more of the neurons of the retina.
