Structure of the sliding clamp

Description
Each protein forms a “doughnut” that can completely surround double-stranded DNA and thus keep polymerase associated with its DNA templates.

The a-helices on the inner surface of the subunit contact DNA but do not bind tightly enough to retard movement of the protein. The E. coli protein has two identical subunits with two DNA-associating domains, while the human and RB69 proteins have three subunits, each with two DNA-associating domains.
