Description
Distribution of dystrophin in muscle cells. (a) In normal muscle cells, all the dystrophin is located in the plasma membrane, and the cytoplasm looks dark. (b) In muscle cells of a boy with DMD, there is no dystrophin in the plasma membranes (so the membranes are invisible), and defective copies of the dystrophin molecules accumulate in the cytoplasm, which stains a light blue. When dystrophin is not present in the cell membrane, muscle contractions eventually tear the membrane and the cell dies.
