Dividing cells progress through a series of stages. G1, S, and G2 are collectively known as interphase, and M phase includes mitosis and cytokinesis. This diagram shows the progression of a cell through the cell cycle to produce two daughter cells. Note: The width of the phases shown in this figure is not meant to reflect their actual length. As discussed in Chapter 13, G1 is typically the longest phase of the cell cycle, while M phase is relatively short. For illustration purposes the interphase chromosomes are shown more compacted than in real cells.
