(a) The progymnosperm Archaeopteris is among the most ancient trees on the planet and was the main constituent of the first forests. Fossils of this tree have been found in Devonian rocks across Canada. (b) A large frond from Archaeopteris halliana in the Escuminac Formation from Miguasha Provincial Park, Quebec.
