Pap smear. Cells of the cervix (shown in the center) change in appearance as they progress through the stages of cervical cancer, as shown in this diagram. During the Pap smear, cells are obtained from the cervix and studied under the microscope for changes. Based on the appearance of cells, a diagnosis can be made.
