SlideshowReport

Examples of plant movements.

Description
(a) Sixteen superimposed photographs of a shoot of the honeysuckle vine Lonicera japonica, taken over two hours, reveal the circular movement known as nutation. (b) Photographs of the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) made before and shortly after a touch reveal the rapid process of leaf folding. Even if only one leaflet is touched, electrical signals travel throughout the complex leaf, causing the entire organ to fold. The leaves will eventually unfold.
