There are a variety of causes for cancer cell metastasis. However, in keeping with the theme of this chapter, answers may include the following: the cells stop producing E-cadherin or other cadherins; an increase in MMP activity; an increased ability to bind the basal lamina; the inability to synthesize fibronectins, resulting in a loss of shape and detachment from the ECM; focal adhesion unresponsiveness beta-catenin function in the Wnt signalling pathway associated with cancer; etc.
