On page 313 of this textbook, the authors state, “The problem with having a criminal record in this country is especially critical when an arrest does not result in a conviction.” Discuss.

When an alleged crime is not adjudicated (brought before court), the alleged offense cannot result in a conviction. Although intuitively, this may be perceived as a “good thing,” in fact, it raises a host of problems for the charged individual. A record of arrest remains on one’s formal criminal history, and can adversely impact the individual’s ability to seek employment in certain occupations, as well as student loans, college enrollment, and firearms permits, among other things. Barring a pardon, the arrest record remains with the individual indefinitely, which is deeply problematic.
