The inherent ability principle involves the impact that genetics plays in developing fitness and athletic ability, while the intrinsic motivation principle refers to the importance of motivation on the ability to achieve exercise success. An individual with genetic potential may not have the motivation to develop optimal fitness or athletic levels, and, likewise, an individual with high motivation may not have the genetic makeup to achieve high levels of success. These differences, in part, account for the various rates and timing of fitness and athletic improvements found in individuals that describes the trainability principle.
