The structural and physiological limits to flexibility are (1 ) bone, (2 ) muscle, (3 ) structures within the joint capsule, (4 ) the tendons which connect muscle to bones and connective tissue surrounding joints, and (5 ) skin. Stretching the ligaments in the joint capsule may lead to a loose joint that would be highly susceptible to injury. However, muscle and tendon are soft tissues that can lengthen over time with stretching exercises.
