Post by: padre on Apr 13, 2014 I believe there is an issue with the descending portion of the loop. The thin descending limb has low permeability to ions and urea, while being highly permeable to water. The loop has a sharp bend in the renal medulla going from descending to ascending thin limb. I am not 100% sure whether water moves via a transport protein or whether it happens because the membrane is just permeable to water. One source states that passive transfer of water occurs, not sure what it means.
