Karim maintains that the starting point for research ethics, and the most basic ethical
  requirement for research, is that

  a. research subjects must give free, informed consent to participate in the study, and
  must not be exploited.
  b. research subjects must not be exposed to any risk other than those that are
  absolutely unavoidable in the study.
  c. all research subjects must receive the absolutely best medical care available.
  d. all research projects must be reviewed and approved by an impartial review
  board.
  e. human subject medical research must be undertaken only for the most serious and
important reasons (and not for the sake of mere curiosity, nor in the interests of
  profits).
