If some primitive predatory eukaryotic cells were similar to modern-day protozoans, they may have been mobile and able to engulf other cells. These characteristics would have been advantageous in the face of a changing atmosphere, and the establishment of a symbiotic relationship with an engulfed aerobe would have been selected for in the eukaryotic cell populations.
