Small farms are an excellent model for sustainable agriculture. Are they regulated by federal agencies to ensure that they are following food safety practices? Please explain in brief.

No, small farms that make less than 500,000 in annual sales are not regulated by federal agencies. They are supposed to follow state and county regulations. This often is a source of confusion and hence frustration. Hence, additional care needs to be followed when purchasing fresh produce from such farms. A relationship with the farmer and understanding of what food safety practices they follow may be helpful in making sound decisions.
