Both chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus, varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Chickenpox is a common childhood disease caused by VZV, which is contracted via inhalation of close person-to-person contact. The VZV remains latent in nerve cells and when an individual becomes immunocompromised can cause the disease known as shingles. Vaccines are now available to prevent both of these diseases.
